Web sales continue to drop at Sharper Image

Sharper Image Corp. is reporting another drop in both e-commerce and overall sales. For the third quarter, web sales dropped by 47% to $8 million from $15 million in the prior year.

At the same time Sharper Image, No. 122 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, reported a net loss of $22.7 million on sales of $69.5 million vs. a net loss of $22.1 million on sales of $106.2 million in Q3 of 2006.

Despite the steep decline in e-commerce sales, Sharper Image says that holiday web sales are off to a good start. “Our web site sales from Black Friday through Cyber Monday were positive and we’re pleased to see our efforts on the web site are starting to show improving results,” CEO Steven A. Lightman told Wall Street analysts on the company’s recent earnings call. “In mid-October we updated our web site aligning it with the look and feel of our catalog and our stores.”

The new design features more content and expedited check-out. “We will be watching how the customer shops and where they go with their clicks, making adjustments as we go along based on actual behavior,” Lightman told analysts. “We managed to accomplish this within the structure of our existing site code and with internal staff efforts and, most importantly, without a big expenditure on a re-platform or a re-skin.”
