BabyUniverse reports third quarter 2007 sales dipped 1.8%

BabyUniverse reports third quarter 2007 sales of $16.2 million, down 1.8% from $16.5 million in the same quarter last year.

The company attributes the decrease mainly to a $1.9 million decline in sales at one of its retail partners, following the elimination of the partner’s September catalog and reduced performance of its October catalog. The company didn’t disclose the name. The decline was offset by $10 million in sales from product lines acquired in the merger with the former BabyUniverse business included in the third quarter, ended Nov. 3, 2007, compared to no sales in the comparable quarter of the prior year, and a $600,000 increase in sales in the toy and proprietary custom doll business.

Net sales for the nine months ended Nov. 3 were $30.5 million, down 1.3% compared with $30.9 million in the same period in 2006.

The merger between eToys Direct and BabyUniverse was approved by the companies’ respective boards in October and gave eToys shareholders controlling interest in the new company, which is expected to be called The Parent Co.

EToys, No. 101 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, is a direct marketer of toys and other youth-related products. BabyUniverse, No. 207 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide provides content and products in the pregnancy, baby and toddler marketplace.

The new company operates baby care products and children’s toy sites such as PoshTots.com, PoshLiving.com and DreamTimeBaby.com; content sites PoshCravings.com and ePregnancy.com; MyTwinn.com, a custom dolls and accessories site; and KBtoys.com, which it manages under a licensing agreement.
