Wal-Mart and iTunes are most searched-for retailer-specific gift cards

Searches related to gift cards were up 14% during the four weeks ending Dec. 15, compared with the same period last year, reports web measurement firm Hitwise. Visa and American Express were the most searched-for brands, with Wal-Mart and iTunes, the online Apple music store, the most popular among retailer-specific brands.

Among the searches for gift cards that included brand names, Visa was mentioned 7.31% of the time, American Express 2.08%, Wal-Mart 1.37% and iTunes 1.20%. Best Buy ranked seventh on the list, included in 0.90% of searches, followed by Target at 0.80%. “Consumers are looking for the gift cards which are more universally accepted across a variety of merchants, such as Visa or American Express, to provide recipients with the options to spend their cards wherever they need, which this year could include necessities like groceries or gas,” says Heather Dougherty, director of research.

Hitwise also reported that traffic to the top 100 online retailer sites was up 12% over last year for the week ended Dec. 15 and 1% compared with the week before. Amazon.com holds on to the top spot, with 12.72% of the visits to the 100 e-commerce sites, while Circuit City’s web site made the largest gain, moving into seventh place with 2.92% of visits, a 15% increase from the previous week.

The most popular product search terms last week were the Nintendo Wii video game console and Ugg boots, Hitwise says.
