ZAP, a company that specializes in selling fuel-efficient motor vehicles, is using eBay.com to launch the first U.S. sale of its Americanized version of Europe’s popular 2-seat, 8-foot-long, 60 mpg Smart Car, before starting a dealer network.
ZAP said it is auctioning its first U.S. Smart Car on eBay.com as part of its marketing strategy to launch a dealer network for the Smart Car and other fuel-efficient, low-emission motor vehicles. Its Smart Car auction listing on eBay, which can be found by using “Smart Car” as a search keyword on eBay Motors, was listed today at more than $28,000 with five more days of bidding.
“With the Smart Car listing, ZAP is seeking to make a statement about the importance of improved transportation technology to promote cleaner air and increased fuel efficiency,” said ZAP, whose name serves as an acronym for its trademarked Zero Air Pollution brand.
ZAP, which already sells vehicles over the web at Zapworld.com, is partnering with Smart-Automobile LLC, which is Americanizing the Smart Car according to U.S. government transportation standards. ZAP had planned to launch the Smart Car earlier on eBay, but eBay insisted that the car fully meet standards set by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency before being listed, ZAP said. The ZAP Smart Car is now cleared for sale in 45 states; ZAP is still seeking regulatory approvals in California and four other states that have different emission testing rules.
The Smart Car is made by DaimlerChrysler.
