Workplace Web Surfers IFess Up

If you surf non-work-related web sites while at the office, youâve got lots of company, according to a new study by the Internet career site Vault.com, New York. Some 90% of employees responding to the companyâs second annual study of Internet use at the workplace say they visit web sites for personal use during office hours. Yet only 80% of employers surveyed say theyâve caught workers in the act ö could be because more than a quarter of the workers in the survey -- 28% -- take precautionary measures to prevent their bosses from detecting their personal use of the Internet at work. Itâs no surprise, then, that an overwhelming 92% of employees surveyed support legislation that would require employers to notify employees of any Internet or email monitoring. Some 82% of the employers say theyâd support such legislation, too ö meaning that the 55% of employees who receive sexually explicit or otherwise improper emails at work will likely remain incognito.
