Consumers moving more toward mobile Internet payments, study says

26.3% of consumers who use cell phones and other mobile communications devices will use them for making mobile e-commerce payments by the end of next year, up from about 16% at the end of 2007, researchers Aite Group LLC says in a new study.

The study also notes that 83% of mobile network operators say they are “likely to extremely likely” to generate fee-based revenue from mobile commerce, including consumers using their mobile devices to make purchases on retail web sites and completing payments through their mobile phone bills.

With mobile system operators already becoming established as networks for purchasing digital content like cell phone ringtones, they’re in a position to further support the spread of mobile commerce, the study says. “As mobile operators have already established business lines around the sale of digital content, the leap to full-blown mobile commerce will be far less dramatic,” Aite Group says.
