Customer trials double Christmas Day at eMusic

Many of the consumers who found iPods and other music players under the tree quickly went to online retailer eMusic to load them up, as customer trials doubled on Christmas Day from the year before, the company reports.

Downloads of music and audiobooks from eMusic on Christmas Day reached a record of nearly half a million. And the company says by the end of December it had passed 400,000 paid subscribers, less than two months after reaching 350,000 paying customers. Subscriptions for music downloads start at $5.99 per month and for audiobooks that consumers can listen to on music players at $9.99 per month.

"We had the most explosive December 25 and 26 in eMusic history, doubling our projections and blowing away our numbers," says David Pakman, president and CEO of New York-based eMusic. " EMusic has entered a new phase of growth and as we continue to build and develop the number one site for discovering music and literature there will be much for our customers to look forward to."

Targeting consumers 25 and older, eMusic claims to be the world`s largest retailer of independent music and the world`s second-largest digital music service after iTunes, with more than 3 million tracks from 20,000 independent labels and over 1,500 audiobook titles. Since adopting a subscription model in November 2003, eMusic has sold more than 177 million music downloads and approximately 50,000 digital audiobooks. The retailer also provides a service called eMusic Mobile that downloads music to mobile phones in a deal with mobile carrier AT&T.
