As an online retailer Biblio.com has always taken an internal approach to content management. For instance Biblio, an e-commerce site that sells rare, used and out-of-print books, developed its own content management system using open source software.
But as the company grows and looks to market itself more effectively in the competitive online books category, it’s adding a new dimension to its content management strategy: a third-party relationship with Muze Inc., which provides entertainment product information and other content for various e-commerce sites, including online books and music retailers.
Under the arrangement Muze will supply Biblio with new and ongoing content such as book descriptions, author biographies, book reviews and book cover images. With more content from an outside source, Biblio can now make almost instant changes to content and is expanding its image library to hold more than 9 million new cover images. As Biblio adds Muze's enhanced book data, which will also include a book synopsis and general information such as publisher, publication date and publishing notes, the result will be packaging content in new formats that gives shoppers more detailed information.
“We’ve always built and maintained our own content management system using free and available open source code,” says Kevin Donaldson, director of sales and marketing for Biblio. “But by using new content supplied by Muze we are increasing the size of our site content by nearly 30 million records and adding more new sources of information such as book reviews.”
Biblio, which has been selling online since February 2003, offers 20 million titles from 2,850 independent booksellers in 24 countries.
