Motorola unveils e-commerce site

Motorola Inc. is getting into the e-commerce business: The 79-year-old, $35 billion company has launched an online store, Store.Motorola.com. It offers Motorola products as well as wireless service plans for various telecommunications companies to go with its numerous mobile phones.

Product sections on the site include mobile phones, mobile phone accessories, cordless phones, home and office products, and two-way radios. The site also includes a section for digital content—ringtones, wallpapers and games designed for use on mobile devices. Additionally, the web store is promoting offers exclusive to the online sales channel.

The e-commerce site, designed, built and hosted in house, is the latest step in a strategic plan Motorola hopes will change the way consumers purchase mobile phones and wireless services. Last year the company launched InstantMoto, where the company installed in select U.S. cities vending machines with carrier-ready mobile phones and accessories. Also last year, Motorola opened its first “pop-up store,” dubbed Destination Q. The temporary store, which featured giveaways and special offers, was placed in an empty building space on Chicago’s Michigan Avenue.
