Become.com launches integrated search and comparison shopping

Search engine Become.com today went live with a beta version of its comparison shopping service. The new service will allow consumers to compare deals on more than 5 million products and services from a wide range of online merchants.

The comparison shopping service is tightly integrated with Become.com’s research index of more than 3 billion pages of shopping related information from 40 million web sites, including buying guides, expert reviews, forums, articles, product recalls and other highly targeted resources.

“Other search engines focus purely on price,” says CEO Michael Yang. “Whereas we provide objective information to help people decide what to buy and then help them with price comparisons.”

With the new service, consumers will be able to locate products, view photos, descriptions and other buying information, and compare prices, including shipping costs and taxes, offered by different retailers.

With other search engines, consumers would go to a comparison shopping site to look at products, go to Google or Yahoo to research the product, and then go back to comparison shopping to check prices, Yang says. “We do all of that at one site,” he says.

Become.com has a multi-criteria filtering mechanism to narrow products choices by brand, prices and categories all at the same time, Yang says.

Become.com is partnering with merchants to provide direct data feeds to the site and be included in the product index. Merchants are paid fees on a cost-per-click basis, Yang says.
