PC sales were robust in Q2 , Gartner and IDC report

Worldwide PC shipments totaled 48.9 million units in the second quarter of 2005, a 14.8% increase from the same period last year, according to preliminary results by Gartner Inc. "Demand for mobile form factors accelerated sales during the second quarter," said Charles Smulders, vice president of Gartner`s Computing Platforms Worldwide Group. "Aggressive price cutting was also a significant factor in driving demand for desktop PCs."

Gartner reported that Dell extended its lead in the worldwide market, accounting for 17.9% of global PC shipments. Dell experienced much higher growth rates outside of the United States, but it also grew ahead of the market rate in its domestic market, where the bulk of its shipments are made.

Hewlett-Packard`s PC shipments growth rate exceeded the worldwide average, Gartner reported, with the company performing well in Europe, Middle East and Africa and Asia/Pacific.

Gartner reported the following shipments of desktop PCs, mobile PCs and servers (in millions) and market shares for Q2 2005:
Dell Inc., 8.75, 17.9%
Hewlett-Packard, 7.12, 14.6%
Lenovo, 3.52, 7.2%
Acer, 2.11, 4.3%
Fujitsu/Fujitsu Siemens, 1.73, 3.6%
Others, 25.66, 52.5%
Total, 48.92, 100%

"While shipment picture was better than Gartner expected, it was another quarter of intense price competition for the PC vendors," Smulders said. "Even so, we expect the operating environment to get yet more difficult in the second half of 2005 as PC replacement opportunities decline."

PC shipments in the United States totaled 15.6 million units, a 10% increase from the second quarter of 2004.

IDC`s Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker reports that worldwide PC shipments grew 16.6% in the second quarter, led by low-cost systems and portable devices among consumers as well as businesses and government.

"This kind of growth in the PC market is just amazing," said Loren Loverde, director of IDC`s Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker. "At some point we expect the flood of consumer and portable demand to let up, but so far falling prices and demand across regions and market segments continues to support growth. Such consistent growth raises the prospect that the recent replacement wave is being supplanted by growing adoption that could sustain higher growth into the future."

“While desktop sales remain stimulated by record low prices, notebook adoption in the United States continues to accelerate," said David Daoud, research manager of Client Computing at IDC. "Segments that have shown sensitivity to pricing have been reacting positively to incentive pricing while fully endorsing mobile computing. This trend of notebook adoption in the U.S. market is expected to remain strong well into the forecast.”

Like Gartner, IDC reports that market leader Dell had a strong second quarter, expanding its lead with worldwide growth of nearly 24%. Hewlett-Packard experienced international shipment growth of nearly 23%. Apple also had a very strong quarter with growth of more than 37%.

Here’s how IDC sees the market (in millions):
Dell, 8.98, 19.3%
HP, 7.25, 15.6%
Lenovo, 3.53, 7.6%
Acer, 2.03, 4.4%
Fujitsu/Fujitsu Siemens, 1.72, 3.7%
Others, 23.04, 49.5%
All Vendors, 46.56, 100%
