Web Use Keeps Workers Happy

Use of the web for personal reasons such as shopping is helping to drive the nation's e-commerce engine Ð and it's also helping employees be happier and more productive on the job, according to a new study from Xylo, Inc., an online recruitment and retention firm. More than half of the 1,000 employees surveyed - 56% -- said that using the Internet for personal reasons at work had a positive impact. Another 28% said Internet usage made them happier or less stressed. The study also found that of the employees who use the Internet at work each day, 74% are more likely to report increases in productivity. And employees (64%) whose companies have very lenient Internet usage policies said using the Internet at work helps them get more work done.

"When companies allow employees to spend a few moments online each day to handle personal issues, such as making dinner reservations, planning a trip, or selecting a last-minute gift, these employees are able to better balance the demands of their work and home lives," says Xylo President Norman Behar. "This provides a powerful competitive advantage in attracting and retaining employees."
