Sharper Image’s web-based sales slip 12% in July; total sales drop 3%
Internet-based sales at Sharper Image Corp. in July slid 12% from web sales in July 2004, falling to $5.5 million from $6.2 million a year ago, the company reports. Companywide sales were down 3% in July to $42 million from $43.2 million. The growth in total sales was due to the opening of new stores: Store sales were up 10% to $27.6 million from $25.1 million, while comparable store sales were down 3%. Total catalog sales/direct marketing sales, including wholesale, were down 25% to $8.9 million from last July`s $11.9 million.
Second quarter web sales were down 10% to $18.4 million from last year`s second quarter sales of $20.4 million. Companywide sales were down 8% to $133.6 million from $145.4 million, while store sales were up 2% to $87.8 million from $86 million and comparable store sales were down 9%. Total catalog sales/direct marketing sales, including wholesale, in Q2 were down 29% to $27.5 million from $39 million.
First half Internet sales were down 11% to $41.5 million from last year`s $46.7 million. Companywide sales were down 8% to $274.8 million from $298.1 million. Store sales were down 1% to $166.1 million and comparable store sales were down 13%. Total catalog sales/direct marketing sales, including wholesale, for the first six months were down 20% to $67.2 million from $84.1 million.
In the first half, the Internet accounted for 15.1% of all sales, down from 15.7% a year ago.
Sharper Image, No. 63 in the Internet Retailer Top 400 Guide to Retail Web Sites, says it experienced higher traffic in July, but that sale pricing reduced revenue.
