J. Crew’s web sales grow 17% in the first three quarters
Internet sales at J. Crew Group Inc. grew 17% to $91.5 million from $78.3 in the first three quarters of the year vs. last year, the company reported today. Total sales in the three quarters dropped 1% vs. a year ago to $524.6 million from $531.3 million. The Internet accounted for 17.4% of J. Crew’s sales in this year’s first nine months vs. 14.7% a year ago. Store sales in the first three quarters grew 2.9% to $280.5 million.
In October, web-based sales grew 20% vs. last year to $13.4 million from $11.2 million while total sales grew 7.9% to $71.1 million. Store sales were up 18% from a year ago to $39.2 million from $33.3.
In the quarter, web sales grew 10% while store sales grew 4% and total sales fell 2.9% from a year ago.
Catalog sales were the main culprit in declining revenue. In the first three quarters, catalog sales fell 20% to $70.6 million from $88.3 million. Factory sales were down 13.4% to $58.1 million.
Other retailers reporting results today included:
-- Brookstone Inc., where total sales for the quarter increased 7.4% while combined catalog and web sales decreased 6.6% after a planned decrease in catalog circulation vs. a year ago.
-- Jos. A. Bank Clothiers Inc., where total sales were up 15.2% and combined web and catalog sales were up 14.3% vs. last year.
--Restoration Hardware Inc., where total sales for the third quarter grew 20.1% and combined web and catalog sales were up 66.2% vs. a year ago.
--Spiegel Group, where web sales were flat and total sales were down for the month vs. last year.
--Urban Outfitters Inc., where combined web and catalog sales were up 34% and total sales up 19% for the quarter vs. last year.
