Peapod Expands to Connecticut
In its first expansion since its financial rescue by international food giant Royal Ahold, Internet grocer Peapod will offer online shopping and delivery service in southern Connecticut. The service will operate out of fulfillment center adjacent to an Ahold Super Stop & Shop store in Norwalk, Conn., the company says.
"With Ahold's strong East Coast presence, and Peapod's established operations in Boston and Long Island, the Connecticut market is a great strategic fit as we continue to focus on expanding along the Eastern seaboard," says Marc van Gelder, Peapod's president and CEO. Van Gelder joined Peapod in May from Stop & Shop, shortly after Royal Ahold signed agreements to purchase a 51% stake in the ailing Internet business.
The new Peapod service begins today in Norwalk and New Canaan and will be available in most of southern Connecticut in early July.
