Overstock.com director Gordon Macklin dies

Gordon S. Macklin, a director of Overstock.com Inc. since October 1999, has died. He was a member of the Audit Committee and the Compensation Committee. "Gordon was a great advisor to this firm since our start-up days," says Patrick Byrne, CEO. "All owners are in his debt, as am I, for his many years of guidance."

From 1970 to 1987, Macklin was president of the National Association of Securities Dealers Inc. and was a driving force behind the automation of stock trading. He was chairman of Hambrecht and Quist Group, a venture capital and investment banking company, from 1987 until 1992. and served as chairman, president and CEO of White River Corp., an information services company, from October 1993 to July 1998.

He was also a director for Martek Biosciences Corp.; MedImmune Inc.; White Mountains Insurance Group Ltd.; and a director, trustee or managing general partner of 48 of the investment companies in the Franklin Templeton Group of Funds.
