Puma.com Fortifies Online Sales Channel with ClearCommerce
QuickStart fraud protection service shows Puma.com ROI in first few months
Austin, Texas - October 18, 2004 - Puma.com launched its site in 2000, to embrace the digital advantages of on-line commerce. However, the deluge of orders for the online athletic footwear and apparel store put a strain on a system that was unprepared for the manual processing and escalating online fraud that ensued.
By 2001, Puma.com Store Manager Greg Pulsifer said, they were getting stacks of envelopes from accounting that were charge backs (or rejected charges). The merchandise was shipped, and postage paid, but the charge was nullified. Originally they thought the credit card companies picked up the tab – but quickly learned that was not the case and Puma.com was responsible for all the charges. And the orders kept coming.
"Our online business has tripled since 2001," said Puma.com Store Manager Greg Pulsifer. "With that rapid growth, we needed a more robust credit card processing and fraud prevention system."
After evaluating fraud protection providers in the market, Puma.com chose ClearCommerce’s QuickStart Hosted Service, an outsourced fraud prevention and payment processing solution for online financial transactions that can be deployed in a day. ClearCommerce subsequently worked with Puma.com to develop custom fraud protection rules for its business.
"The ClearCommerce QuickStart solution saved us from customer frustration, loss of product and chargebacks from credit card companies, virtually paying for itself within the first few months," said Pulsifer. "In addition, we’ve become more efficient because of the control we have over our transactions and the business reports we can run."
With QuickStart the merchant system simply integrates to the ClearCommerce API, which routes fraud screening and payment authorization requests to the service via SSL or HTTPS Internet connection. The service performs fraud screening and payment authorization – typically in less than 3 seconds – and returns the results to the merchant’s system through the same API.
"Many online retailers can’t keep up with the constantly evolving threat of fraudsters, leaving them vulnerable to attacks that can exact a high price," said Robert J. Lynch, president and CEO of ClearCommerce. "Our QuickStart service is designed to jump start the fraud protection process for online retailers and put them back in control."
ClearCommerce offers the most accurate and effective solutions available to protect against fraud attacks, increase revenue and improve profitability of card-not-present sales channels. The solutions integrate a comprehensive and powerful arsenal of fraud detection technologies to create a flexible decision platform that can be easily customized to specific merchant business requirements.
