Sterling Commerce Leading Retail Industry in Implementation of New Global Data Synchronization Network
Company to enable migration of more than 800 data synchronization customers to the GS1 Global Registry
Columbus, Ohio -- Monday, October 18, 2004 -- Business integration leader Sterling Commerce announced today its support for the new GS1 Global Registry and has processes in place to simplify migration to the Registry for more than 800 customers on its Sterling TR2 Hosted Solution for data synchronization. While customers will be responsible for standard GS1 subscription fees, Sterling Commerce does not charge for the migration service.
The GS1 Global Registry, which moved into production Aug. 1, 2004, is part of the Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN), a network of interoperable data pools developed for the purpose of exchanging supply chain data among trading partners worldwide. The goal of the network is to lower the cost of introducing new products and to reduce costly errors that result when retailers and suppliers do not classify item data the same way.
While data pools such as UCCnet, ECCnet and SINFOS provide registry and data synchronization services on a local level, the focus of the GDSN is to create interoperability among all data pools. With a single, global registry and single way of classifying product data, retailers can receive standards-compliant data from business partners all over the world. Similarly, suppliers can synchronize their item data with GDSN retailers located anywhere in the world without having to register with (and pay fees to) multiple data pools.
A long-time champion of the movement to create global data synchronization standards, Sterling Commerce recently helped Noble Home Fashions, a leading manufacturer and distributor of textile home furnishings, to exchange item data through the new GS1 Global Registry. The implementation proves the reliability of GDSN 1.3.1 standards in a production environment and demonstrates the benefit of GS1 to both large and small companies.

Governance of the GDSN is under the authority of the EAN.UCC Global Standard Management Process (GSMP), an independent, international organization.
