Google and Overture sign paid search agreements with Yahoo Japan


With the competition to provide paid search increasing between Overture Services Inc. and Google Technology Inc. since Google added paid search listings several months ago, both are looking to grow by ex U.S. expansion. The newest target is Japan, the largest web advertising market outside of the U.S., where both Google and Overture this week signed agreements to provide paid search services to Yahoo Japan, one of Japan’s most-visited Internet destinations. Yahoo’s Japanese subsidiary has not previously offered paid listings, but it will now show paid listings from both search engines.

Google already provides non-paid listings to Yahoo Japan, including those from more than 100 million Japanese language web pages. In addition to the sponsored links it will now provide to Yahoo Japan, Google provides search services to other Japanese sites including Excite Japan. Overture, which expects to launch service in Japan within the next month, recently has signed agreements to provide paid search services for other Japanese Internet destinations including Infoseek Japan and Lycos Japan. Both Google and Overture have agreements to provide services to other Yahoo sites.

Japan, with some 60 million Internet users, is regarded as the second largest marketplace for web advertising, after the U.S.
