Q2 online sales at Staples Inc. increase 25.7%
Worldwide Internet sales at office superstore Staples Inc. rose 25.7% to $860 million in the second quarter, up from $684 million in 2004’s second quarter. Total company revenues increased 12.3% to $3.47 billion compared to $3.09 billion a year earlier.
Online sales represented 24.8% of all sales in the second quarter. That compares with 22.8% of sales in the second quarter of 2004.
North American retail sales rose 11.8% to $1.9 billion for the quarter from $1.7 billion in the year-ago period.
Net income rose 20% to $147 million, up from $122.5 million a year earlier. For the first half, net income increased 23.5% to $306.6 million from $248.2 million in 2004’s first half.
At the end of the quarter, Staples operated 1,716 stores worldwide. It opened 14 new stores and closed one store in the U.S. and opened seven stores in Canada. In Europe, it opened two new stores and closed one store in the United Kingdom.
