Forget about charging for shipping, BizRate survey says

If online retailers harbored any notions that they could finally get online shoppers to pay for shipping, a weekend survey of online shoppers by BizRate.com Inc. made quick work of those ideas. BizRate says that 49% of purchases made during Thanksgiving weekend were influenced by free shipping deals, compared to only 38% last year. 44% of shoppers on Monday said they were influenced by free shipping.

BizRate.com’s consumer-oriented shopping comparison site has over 138 free shipping sites featured, about 20% more than the same time last year.

BizRate also reports that the Thanksgiving weekend generated $679.3 million in online sales, up 55% from last year’s $438.3 million over the same weekend. The highest online shopping day was Sunday, when sales reached $235.7 million, BizRate says.

BizRate bases its numbers on post-shopping surveys of customers at 2,000 retail web sites which have contracted with BizRate to conduct customer satisfaction surveys. It rounds out its projections with publicly available data from sites where it does not have contracts.
