WalMart.com enters the Christmas tree business

In another test of how a mass merchant can expand its wares online, Wal-Mart Stores Inc.’s WalMart.com is selling Christmas trees for the first time this year. Fraser firs of 6 to 6.5 feet are $57.64 plus shipping.

WalMart.com will sell trees through Dec. 9. The retailer won’t say how many trees it expects to sell. It says the trees will be delivered within a few business days with a nutrient to keep them fresh and a disposal bag for after the holidays. Wal-Mart has contracted with a Christmas tree farm to cut and ship the trees as they are ordered.

WalMart.com is also selling complementary products, including wreaths, lights and giant inflatable outdoor characters, including Santa and a snowman.
