FIRST DATA “WIRING” THE POINT OF SALE WITH INTERNET TECHNOLOGY TO SPEED PAYMENTS IN THE QSR MARKET

Leading Payments Processor Deploys Over 9,000 Internet-based Terminals Already in 2004

DENVER, October 26, 2004 – First Data Corp. (NYSE: FDC), today announced that it is leading the “Wiring” of the Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) point-of-sale (POS) and has already deployed 9,000 Internet Protocol (IP) enabled POS terminals into the QSR marketplace this year.

“This is a significant milestone as the QSR industry is continuing to expand the availability of electronic payments to consumers and is seeking ways to reduce transaction speeds,” said Gregory Holmes, senior vice president for First Data Corporation, which processes for more than 50,000 outlets in the QSR marketplace. “IP-based transactions can be processed in a matter of a few seconds, which helps make card transactions as fast as cash.”

IP is a specification for managing the transportation of data from one computer to another via the Internet or a private Intranet. When compared to traditional “dial up” terminal technology used at millions of retail locations worldwide, IP based terminals reduce transaction times to three to five seconds. This is increasingly important to QSRs as faster transaction times are critical to customer service.

The nine thousand terminals deployed by First Data are VeriFone® Omni® 3750 terminals. First Data provides services through terminals that are customized for the QSR market and feature credit, debit and gift card functionality. First Data offers nationwide availability with no signature required for transactions under certain dollar amounts and optional customer receipts.

QSRs using Omni 3750 terminals with First Data customized services can utilize an automated management feature. This allows a QSR chain to automatically update all of their POS terminals across multiple locations with added features. Automated management, for example, can include adding new payment options or having the terminals print a new slogan on receipts.

“First Data enables QSRs to use IP terminals that are fast, secure, reliable and provide cost-effective, real-time delivery of POS transactions over the Internet,” said Holmes. “By using IP enabled terminals to accept credit and debit card payments, consumers are satisfied with the speed at which their purchases are conducted and can pay for food using their preferred payment option.”

Wiring QSRs with IP technology allows not only for the processing of credit, debit and stored value payments, but opens the door to easy integration of future offerings such as loyalty, payroll cards and other electronic payment forms.
