The holiday online spending scorecard
There were a number of record days and weeks in this year’s online holiday season. And shopping is staying strong almost all the way until Christmas. “Allowing customers to buy it online and pick it up in the store has really skewed the numbers this year,” says Daniel E. Hess, vice president of comScore Networks Inc., which measures online shopping. IN addaition, many retailers are promoting express shipping--even discounted express shipping. “People can shop online practically up until Christmas,” Hess says.
ComScore reports the following online retail spending numbers and growth from last year for the weeks ending:
Nov. 29 (Thanksgiving week): $912 million, up 25%
Dec. 6: $1.4 billion, up 38%
Dec. 13: $1.7 billion, up 36%
Dec. 20: $1.56 billion*, up 25% (Internet Retailer estimate based on comScore numbers through Dec. 18).
Year-over-year growth measures increases against the corresponding week last year, i.e., first week after Thanksgiving, second week after Thanksgiving, etc., rather than against the same dates.
ComScore also reports the following notable days for online retail spending:
Dec. 13: $288 million
Dec. 18: $270 million+
Dec. 17: $245 million
Dec. 2: $231.5 million (Monday after Thanksgiving)
