Amazon chips in Wikia financing
Amazon.com is the sole investor in Wikia Inc.’s Series B funding and is Wikia’s first corporate investor. The amount of Amazon`s investment was not disclosed.
Wikia received $4 million in Series A funding earlier this year from investor groups, including Bessemer Venture Partners and Omidyar Network, and individual backers.
With support from Amazon, which is No. 1 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide to Retail Web Sites, Wikia expects to expand its range of topics and serve new Internet communities around the world, says Wikia founder and chairman Jimmy Wales.
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos says his company plans to support other sites like Wikia, which has “cracked the code for user-generated content.”
Wikia supports the development of the open source software that runs both Wikipedia and Wikia, as well as thousands of other wiki sites that promote web-based exchanges of ideas.
