Sharper Image’s Q1 web and total slide 26% from year ago


First quarter Internet sales at Sharper Image Corp. were down 26% to $17.2 million from $23.2 million in the first quarter a year ago, while total company sales were also off 26% to $104 million from $141.2 million, the company reports. Store sales for the quarter were down 28% to $56.8 million from $78.3 million in the prior year, while comparable store sales decreased 30%. Total catalog sales/direct marketing sales, including wholesale, were down 24% to $30.1 million from $39.7 million a year earlier.

In April, Internet sales were down 30% from April 2005 to $5.3 million from $7.6 million. Total company sales were down 23% to $33.1 million from $42.7 million. Total store sales were down 30% to $16.3 from $23.4 million and comparable store decreased 32. Total catalog sales/direct marketing sales, including wholesale, were down 2% to $11.5 million from $11.7 million a year earlier.

"Although overall sales continued to be affected by planned lower total advertising expenditures, we saw improving returns on infomercial spending throughout the quarter and as a result, experienced higher infomercial sales, particularly in March and April,” said Richard Thalheimer, founder, chairman and chief executive officer.
