ClearCommerce Merchant Holiday Hotline Assists Online Retailers Fight Fraud

Austin, TX – Nov. 17, 2004 – ClearCommerce, the leading provider of fraud prevention and payment processing solutions, announced today a free fraud prevention service unique to the industry. The first of its kind, this fraud prevention advisory service is available to all online retailers free of charge. The Merchant Holiday Hotline will operate from retailer’s “Black Friday”, the day after Thanksgiving through Jan. 10, 2005, with a telephone support hotline available Monday through Friday and an e-mail help line 24/7. This period is retail’s heaviest shopping season of the year and is also when the fraudsters are most active. Online retailers can call The Merchant Holiday Hotline at 1-866-497-0343 or e-mail questions to HolidayHotline@ClearCommerce.com

“Fraudsters take advantage of the crush of the holiday season, when a retailer’s operations are running at full capacity and resources are spread thin,” said Julie Fergerson, VP of Emerging Technologies for ClearCommerce. “We’ve heard merchants complain that there is no way for them to work with the card associations and law enforcement when they are hit with fraud. Well, we’re here to help.”

ClearCommerce has a long history of working with card associations and law enforcement, and helping retailers who are experiencing fraud locate who to call and how to report fraud activities to the authorities. ClearCommerce established a partnership with the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) to confidentially send information about suspected fraudulent orders from retailers in an aggregated format versus sending single isolated cases.

“Fraudsters generally share their bad habits among many retailers. The more information we have to identify fraudsters, the better chances we have to catch them,” said Dale Miskell, Supervisory Special Agent of the Federal Bureau of Invesigation/IC3. “ClearCommerce will provide a great service to show us the bigger fraud picture across multiple retailers and in larger volumes.”

“Once a fraudster figures out that he can successfully commit fraud on a merchants’ website, he will continue to do so until you stop him,” said Fergerson. “ClearCommerce can help merchants identify fraud attacks, report suspect orders to law enforcement, and investigate questionable orders.”
