The 2002 holiday shopping season brought a sharp increase of Internet users to retail web sites based in the United Kingdom, Nielsen//NetRatings said.
Nielsen//NetRatings noted that 12.8 million Internet users, or 60% of the total Internet audience in the UK, shopped on an e-commerce site during December 2002, up 40.6% from the 9.1 million Internet users who shopped online in December 2001.
Nielsen also noted that UK retail web sites experienced an average sales-conversion rate of 70% among shoppers.
It said the two most frequently visited sites in the UK were Amazon.co.uk, with 6.7 million unique visitors, and eBay.co.uk, with 5 million unique visitors. It added that Argos scored the highest among "high-street" retailers, with 2.5 million unique online visitors.
