Safeway leads all retailers with 440% growth in online ads, study says


National grocery company Safeway Inc. increased its number of online advertising impressions by 440% year-over-year in the first quarter, leading all providers of retail goods and services, Nielsen/NetRatings says in an AdRelevance Report released today.

Safeway operates Safeway.com and Vons.com in addition to more than 1,800 stores under several brands including Safeway, Vons, Randalls, Carrs and Dominick’s, Although Safeway led all retail goods and services providers, it ranked fifth among companies representing other industries, Nielsen said.

Nielsen said telecommunications company AT&T Wireless Services ranked first with a 1,262% increase in online ad impressions, followed by pharmaceuticals provider Schering Plough with 737%, financial services company MBNA Corp. with 471% and automaker DaimlerChrysler with 461%.
