Apple leads in visits to computer hardware sites


Apple Computer Inc. led in visits to computer hardware web sites for the week ended May 16, with 4.2 million visitors, topping second-ranked Hewlett-Packard Co. by 65%, Nielsen/NetRatings reports.

HP had 2.5 million visitors for the same week, followed by Dell Inc. with 2.3 million visitors; Gateway Inc., 418,000; Sun Microsystems Inc., 304,000; and eMachines, 276,000.

HP led in terms of average time per visit, with 14 minutes, 18 seconds; followed by Dell, 10 minutes, 14 seconds; Gateway, 9 minutes, 43 seconds; Apple, 8 minutes, 46 seconds; Sun, 5 minutes, 11 seconds; and eMachines, 2 minutes, 22 seconds.

Nielsen noted that, among age groups, consumers aged 45+ accounted for the largest share of visits, with 44%; followed by ages 55+, 23% and ages 25-34, 16 %.

Among income groups, households with incomes of $50,000-$74,999 accounted for the largest share of visits at 29%, followed by $25,000-$49,999, 26%; and $75,000-$99,999, 17%.

For the same week, the category of books, movies and music garnered the most online advertising impressions among advertisers in the retail goods and services industry, with 485 million impressions, according to Nielsen’s AdRelevance report.

The top ten cited by that report: -- Books, movies and music, 485.2 million -- Miscellaneous services, 310.5 million -- Auctions, 231.9 million -- Home improvement, 186.1 million -- Personal care, 139.6 million -- Electronics, 138.9 million -- Flowers and gifts, 113.2 million -- Office supply, 107.9 million -- Apparel and jewelry, 94.6 million -- Domestics, 77.6 million.
