Who’s getting the lion’s share of visitors?


Coming as no surprise, eBay and Amazon.com had the greatest percentage of all traffic among shopping and classifieds web sites in February, according to the Retail Monthly Category Report from research firm Hitwise. The research is based on U.S. Internet usage for the month of February 2007.

Online auctioneer eBay drew 18.55% of all online shopping and classifieds site visitors last month, Hitwise data says. Companion eBay Motors received 3.52%. E-retail colossus Amazon.com drew 3.18%.

Following are the retail and classified ad web sites with the greatest share of visitors in their category in February:

  • 1. eBay, 18.55%
  • 2. eBay Motors, 3.52%
  • 3. Amazon.com, 3.18%
  • 4. Walmart,com, 1.83%
  • 5. CraigsList.com, 1.82%
  • 6. Target.com, 1.13%
  • 7. Netflix.com, 0.95%
  • 8. Dell USA, 0.80%
  • 9. BestBuy.com, 0.78%
  • 10. Half.eBay.com, 0.64%
Bill Tancer, general manager of global research at Hitwise, is speaking at the Internet Retailer Conference & Exhibition, June 4-7 in San Jose, in a session entitled Getting Better Mileage From the Search Engines.
