EPCglobal COMPLETES TESTING OF GENERATION 2 STANDARD; RESULTS VALIDATE PROPOSED SPECIFICATION

Community Continues Drive Toward Royalty-Free UHF Generation 2 Standard

LAWRENCEVILLE, New Jersey, December 3, 2004 – EPCglobal Inc™, the not-for-profit standards organization entrusted with driving global adoption of Electronic Product Code (EPC) technology across multiple industries, today announced that testing on the proposed UHF Generation 2 specification has been completed, with results validating the feasibility of the proposed standard. This announcement marks one of the final steps toward ratification of the royalty-free UHF Generation 2 specification, which is expected by the end of 2004.

This final phase began last month, with technology manufacturers developing and then testing prototype chips, tags and readers built to the EPCglobal UHF Generation 2 specification. The trial was managed through EPCglobal certification partner MET Labs and provided proof that products could be built against the proposed candidate specification.

The EPCglobal UHF Generation 2 protocol, a consensus standard developed by more than 60 of the world’s leading technology companies, describes the core capabilities required to meet essential performance needs as set by the end-user community.

With demonstration testing complete, the UHF Generation 2 specification will become a standard after a final review by EPCglobal’s Business and Technical Steering Committees and then final ratification by the EPCglobal Board of Governors.

The UHF Generation 2 standard is a foundational element of the EPCglobal Network, a network that combines RFID technology, the Internet and the EPC to provide accurate, cost-efficient visibility of information throughout supply chains.
