Sunbeam Shines With New UCCnet Solution

LANSA Data Sync Direct Automates GTIN Publishing

Downers Grove, Ill. — December 6, 2004 — Boca Raton, Florida, is home to one of the best-known consumer products companies in the world, designing, manufacturing and marketing products under brands such as Sunbeam, Oster and Mr. Coffee. In 2003, Sunbeam Products, Inc. implemented a solution as a means to meet compliance with Wal-Mart’s UCCnet requirements. However, in Spring 2004, Sunbeam moved off its original UCCnet solution and implemented LANSA Data Sync Direct in four weeks. Once the solution was implemented, Sunbeam republished its GTINs with Wal-Mart.

Randy Sinclair, director, EDI and E-Commerce at Sunbeam, explained why the company changed its application. “We needed an automatic process. We had already cleaned our data and wanted a process to get data from our JDE system rather than type it in whenever we had a customer request. We have 7,000 active SKUs, so you see how necessary an automated approach is to forward that data to the Global Registry.”

Sunbeam initially published 400 GTINs (Global Trade Item Number) to Wal-Mart. After implementing LANSA Data Sync Direct, Sunbeam has now published to Wegmans, Ace Hardware, Lowe’s, The Home Depot and other businesses. The company is taking a step-by-step approach to publishing its GTINs. Sinclair said, “We prepare and publish GTINs according to the SKUs for each customer. For example, we published 300 GTINs to Lowe’s and 50 to Wegmans. We will publish more GTINs as our customers become ready to receive them.”

LANSA Data Sync Direct runs on an OS/400 platform and interfaces with Sunbeam’s ERP system, JD Edwards World. Users access data through Windows XP clients connected to an eServer iSeries 830.

Alan Christensen, LANSA’s vice president of solution products, said, “Sunbeam is typical of our customers that wanted to leverage their investment of enterprise Item data in their ERP system (in this case JDE on iSeries). Because LANSA supports integration with over 20 ERP systems, implementation services are straightforward with known mappings to specific releases. The interface to the LANSA synchronization solution is a simple browser-based interface that retrieves key JDE attributes in a real-time mode and brings them up in our GTIN Manager. LANSA Data Sync Direct’s validation rules then ensure the data is EAN.UCC-compliant before sending to UCCnet.“

Sinclair added, “We picked LANSA Data Sync Direct for two reasons: we needed to meet Wal-Mart’s deadline of January 1, 2004, and we were looking for products certified with UCCnet. Because LANSA Data Sync Direct is one of the few solutions certified in every area, we can use it for our long-term solution.”
