Sharper Image manages to keep web growth ahead of total growth
Unlike other retailers where web-based sales race ahead of total sales, Sharper Image Corp. had such a good year that it was hard pressed to keep Internet sales growth ahead of growth in other channels.
Web-based sales including auctions for the year just ended grew 40% to $69.5 million from $49.8 million the prior year, the company reported today. Meanwhile, total sales were up 32% to $507 million from $383.2 million. Stores sales were up 28%, comparable store sales were up 14%, catalog sales were up 40% and web sales excluding auctions were up 53%.
In January, Internet sales, including auctions, increased 64% to $6.1 million from $3.7 million last January. Total sales for January increased 42% to $34.7 million from $24.7 million. Store sales increased 52% and comparable store sales increased 37%. Catalog sales increased 16% to $10.3 million and Internet sales, excluding auctions, increased 73%.
