SHOP.ORG & BIZRATE.COM LAUNCH NEW HOLIDAY SURVEY FOR ONLINE RETAILERS

Washington, DC, November 1, 2002—Shop.org and BizRate.com announced today that they will poll retailers selling online and US consumers several times this holiday season to determine the mood of the Internet retailing marketplace, and determine the impact of the Internet on this year’s holiday season. The new Online Holiday Outlook Study will serve as a true barometer of the strength of online retailing during the holiday season. Shop.org is the online division of the National Retail Federation, and BizRate.com is a comparison shopping site and ecommerce research firm.

Every two weeks during November and December, this unique holiday study will ask retailers, all members of Shop.org, to assess their performance in areas such as sales, fulfillment and marketing. More than 60 Shop.org retailers have already confirmed their participation. The first installment of the study will be released November 26.

“Shop.org is in a unique position to leverage its membership of leading Internet and multi-channel retailers and help them track their performance relative to their peers during the critical holiday season,” said Scott Silverman, executive director of Shop.org. “Shop.org is a member-driven organization and this initiative was the result of input collected from the Shop.org Research Committee.”

Complementing the data collected from retailers, will be insights into the role online shopping plays in consumers overall holiday purchasing polled through BizRate.com’s panel of more than 500,000 consumers.

“We’re excited to be working with Shop.org on this online holiday survey,” said Chuck Davis, CEO of BizRate.com. “The holiday season represents a large portion of retailers’ annual revenue. By tracking online performance and consumer shopping trends on a regular basis during the holiday period, retailers can quickly identify trends impacting their business and take appropriate action.”

Holiday sales from all retail channels – stores, catalog and online – are expected to increase 4.0 percent over 2001 according the National Retail Federation. “The online channel continues to grow and play a larger role in overall retail sales,” said Ray Greenly, Shop.org’s vice president of member services and research. “We hope that insights provided by this online survey will help retailing online make as big a contribution as possible to a successful holiday season.”

Participation in the study is limited to members of Shop.org. For more information on membership, contact Ray Greenly at (202) 626-8190.
