Colonial Candle’s revised web site features improved site search function

ColonialCandle.com’s redesigned web site—launched March 2—features a site search tool developed by AmericanEagle.com that enables shoppers to quickly filter through candles by fragrance, color, and type. The site also offers a section on decorating ideas, enabling visitors to narrow product selections based on occasion and see products in lifestyle settings.

Colonial Candle, a manufacturer as well as retailer of candle products, decided to redesign the site and enhance site search capabilities when it moved site management from one of its larger sister companies to a Midwest company, says Robert Lennes, Colonial Candle product manager.

“The other search was a basic keyword search,” he says. “We had a tab for shop by fragrance, shop by color and we expanded that to make that more dynamic. This one is a little bit more robust.”

As visitors enter terms in the search board, the new site search tool queries the product database, providing a list of items that match the letter sequence being typed the visitors. The tool also provides alternatives based on spelling errors or closely matched terms, while drill down menus within the results pages allow users to narrow products based on specific criteria.

The search function also provides sorting capabilities, corresponding breadcrumb navigation, and a “more like this” option which calls on dynamic HTML technology to present products with a pop-up window, graying our the rest of the screen. Customers can sort by price or best-selling products in each category.
