Cisco Systems technology exec joins board of Netflix
Charles Giancarlo, an expert in digital video transmission who oversees technology development at Internet infrastructure provider Cisco Systems Inc., has joined the board of directors of online movie rental business Netflix Inc., bringing the number of Netflix directors to eight.
"Charlie understands the future of the Internet—and the scale required for the video Internet of the next decade—so we are thrilled to have him join our board," says Reed Hastings, co-founder, chairman and CEO of Netflix, No. 231 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide.
Giancarlo is senior vice president and chief development officer of Cisco and president of Linksys, a Cisco division that provides wireless, voice over IP and other networking technologies. A 12-year veteran of Cisco, he oversees 16,000 engineers in areas such as digital video, unified communications, wireless networking, security, storage networking and network management.
"The world of video communications and distribution for entertainment is changing dramatically," Mr. Giancarlo says. "Cisco and Netflix are on the cutting edge of innovation in this market. Serving on the Netflix board will bring me closer to the needs of all Web video companies. I can`t wait to eventually get all of my Netflix content online."
Hastings will deliver the June 6 keynote address, The Transformation of the Movie Rental Industry, at the Internet Retailer Conference & Exhibition, June 4-7 in San Jose.
