Circuit City takes e-learning up the ladder

Circuit City Stores Inc. is rolling out its successful e-learning program to corporate staffers, installation technicians and logistics employees, the Richmond, VA-based retailer tells Internet Retailer.

“We are expanding beyond the store base to the store support group,” says John McKeever, director of superstore training for Circuit City Stores Inc. “E-learning has cut out a lot of training time for us.”

Circuit City will extend e-learning to 3,000 employees at the corporate level, including managers, directors and buyers, McKeever says. It will offer web-based classes in management development, leadership, team development, performance management and performance evaluations.

In addition, it is making e-learning available to technicians who install products for Circuit City customers and to logistics and distribution center personnel.

Circuit City introduced web-based training into its stores two and a half years ago. E-learning has reduced the time it takes for employees to reach certain levels of proficiency, making them more effective sales people sooner, McKeever says. It’s also reduced the cost of training by eliminating much costly classroom training, he says. Circuit City creates its e-learning courses through DigitalThink Inc.
