AOL reports blocking 1 billion e-mails a day
Better be careful that you`re not sending customers and prospects too many e-mails. It could get you in touble with AOL.
A new spam-blocking service from America Online Inc., the largest provider of e-mail services to consumers, is proving popular with customers. AOL reports that one day last week it blocked 1 billion pieces of what its customers have reported as e-mail spam. The amount of spam-blocked e-mail messages has increased 25% in only three weeks, AOL says. AOL says that level equates to blocking 28 e-mail messages a day from reaching its customers’ mailboxes.
With the release of AOL 8.0 last October, AOL included a "Report Spam" button. Customers are sending what they consider to be spam 5.5 million times a day, up from 4 million a day reported less than two weeks ago.
“The fact that the volume of junk e-mail blocked by AOL has reached one billion reflects the significant and continuing attacks that spammers have launched against Internet consumers, a major issue facing the industry,” AOL says.
“Our members are sending AOL a very clear message: can the spam," said Jon Miller, chairman & CEO of AOL.
