Retail kiosks in North America to grow 69% from 2003 to 2007, study says

As consumers grow more comfortable with shopping on kiosks, the number of kiosks in North American retail locations will grow 69% to 105,000 by 2007, up from 62,000 in 2003, Francie Mendelsohn, president of Summit Research Associates Inc., tells InternetRetailer.com.

“Retail is the biggest category in kiosk growth, and the growing acceptance of kiosks by consumers is driving that growth,” she says, adding that most retail kiosks are web-based.

Summit Research projects that the number of kiosks in North American retail locations will rise 13% this year to 70,000, then hit a growth peak in 2005, when they’ll rise to 84,000. The growth rate will taper off in the following two years, at 14% in 2006 and 9% in 2007, Mendelsohn says.

By comparison, Europe’s number of retail kiosks will grow slightly faster, rising 16% this year to 57,000 from 49,000 last year, then rising 25% next year to 71,000, before slowing down to a growth rate of 14% in 2006 and 10% in 2007, Mendelsohn projects. Europe will have 89,000 retail kiosks by 2007, she says.

Summit Research, based in Rockville, MD, is making available additional worldwide kiosk data in a report revised for this year, Kiosks and Internet Technology.
