iTunes’ downloads cross the 100 million mark

Music fans have downloaded 100 million songs from Apple Computer Inc.’s iTunes.com, the company has reported. It last reported cumulative downloads on its first anniversary in April, when consumers had downloaded 70 million.

To celebrate its 100 million milestone, it awarded the customer who bought the 100 millionth song an Apple Powerbook computer, an iPod playback device and a gift certificate for 10,000 songs.

ITunes features more than 700,000 songs from all five major music companies and over 450 independent music labels. ITunes.com is allows customers to store songs on up to five devices. Apple is No. 20 in the Internet Retailer Top 300 Guide to online retailers.
