Shutterfly sales up 54%, personalized products and services rise 90%


Web-only digital photo services retailer Shutterfly Inc. reported $32.6 million in revenue for Q3 2007, a 54% increase from $21.2 million in the same quarter of 2006. Orders for the quarter, ended Sept. 30, 2007, were 1.7 million, up about 42% from 1.2 million in the prior year quarter.

The company’s biggest gains came in sales related to personalized products and services, including photo books, folded greeting cards, calendars and other photo-based merchandise. Revenue from personalized products and services climbed 90% in Q3 2007, to $14.6 million. The category represented 45% of third-quarter total revenue for Shutterfly, No. 93 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide.

The average order value for the quarter was $19.63, compared with $17 for the third quarter 2006, up 15%. Average orders per day were approximately 18,100 for the third quarter 2007, an increase of 34% compared with 13,500 in the prior year quarter.

“Another strong quarter of execution resulted in robust growth in revenues, customers and orders,” says president and CEO Jeffrey Housenbold. “Shutterfly continues to increase awareness of our premium brand, while we invest in our business to take advantage of the rapidly-expanding markets for social expression and personal publishing.”

Recent marketing initiatives include launching Halloween-themed party invitations, greeting cards and photo books; expanding holiday greeting card products with new formats, styles and form factors, including a line of premium cards from leading designers; and launching a line of photo book and holiday cards designed by Martha Stewart and available exclusively at Shutterfly.com.
