EMPIRIX LAUNCHES FIRST COLLABORATIVE LOAD TESTING SOLUTION FOR WEB APPLICATIONS

E-TEST SUITE 8.0 UNITES DISTRIBUTED TEAMS AND SPEEDS APPLICATION DEPLOYMENT

Customer reports two-thirds reduction in testing cycle times

BEDFORD, Mass. - Jan. 17, 2005 - Empirix® Inc., the leader in helping organizations strengthen customer loyalty through assured Web and voice application performance, today launched the first collaborative load testing solution for Web applications and Web Services. The latest version of the company`s flagship testing suite, e-TEST® suite 8.0, incorporates an entirely new generation of its e-Load® enterprise load testing solution that allows multiple users in different locations to collaborate in real time to optimize application performance. The result: improved productivity and integration of distributed development and testing teams, which dramatically shortens test cycles and enable organizations to deliver better applications in less time.

"Testing and tuning the performance of enterprise Web applications is a complex task that is typically undertaken by a team of individuals that may include performance engineers, QA testers, architects, developers, DBAs and other team members," said Theresa Lanowitz, Research Director at Gartner Inc. "Fostering communication among those individuals can be challenging, and often leads to testing delays. The ability to collaborate on tests in real time will provide a great boost to optimization efforts, and generally allow performance professionals to conduct more extensive and thorough tuning in a shorter amount of time."

No more trade-offs between ensuring performance and meeting deployment deadlines

e-TEST suite 8.0 provides organizations with powerful load testing, analysis and tuning capabilities and an effective means for collaborating, sharing results and communicating among team members during the performance testing and optimization process. This allows IT teams to leverage knowledge dispersed throughout the organization to maximize scalability and efficiency while still meeting application deployment deadlines.

Authoria, a leader in strategic Human Capital Management, was one of the first organizations to utilize e-TEST suite 8.0. Because Authoria`s product engineering team is based in three different locations on two continents, and the engineering team works with a separate application deployment department that delivers managed application solutions, the company found great value in e-TEST suite`s collaborative features. "Being able to cooperatively analyze what`s going on during a test helps us respond more efficiently to customer needs," said Elizabeth Ricci, vice president of Engineering for Authoria. "With e-TEST suite 8.0, we have cut performance testing time by two-thirds, both for development purposes and when we judge hardware requirements for hosted and managed customer applications. This gives Authoria a competitive advantage because we can deliver extremely high quality solutions far more quickly."

How it works
Traditional automated load testing tools require a performance engineer to install a desktop application that configures load agents, executes test scenarios, and produces reports. As problems are found, the engineer either gathers the appropriate team of specialists around his or her desktop PC to view results or emails reports on completed tests to the team, who then analyze the data to determine how to tune the application. With increasingly distributed development and testing teams, the process of creating and distributing reports for subsequent analysis by the appropriate experts means that weeks can pass before tuning opportunities are identified. After corresponding application updates are made, the second test is run. This iterative process continues, sometimes for weeks, until all major bottlenecks have been isolated and addressed, the application performance meets target objectives or, most commonly, time runs out and the application has to be deployed as-is.

e-TEST suite 8.0 changes the paradigm. With e-TEST suite 8.0, performance engineers install e-Load once and then access powerful load testing capabilities from any Web browser. Users can configure and run load tests, set up server monitors, view real-time performance data and analyze historical results from any location - all through a Web-browser interface. More importantly, e-TEST suite now allows multiple, distributed users to collaborate during a load test by being able to join the same test session and view test results in progress, in addition to viewing historical results stored in a shared database repository. Instead of gathering around the load test machine to view the results or waiting for reports via email, participants can now share results in real time with other team members, discuss recommendations, tune their applications on the fly and immediately re-run tests together. In addition, a single e-TEST suite installation can now support multiple users running concurrent load test sessions, further increasing access to testing capabilities and reducing maintenance costs.

e-TEST suite 8.0 provides what QA professionals need most: time

"Performance testing and tuning is a team effort," said Joe Fernandes, director of Product Marketing for Web Test solutions at Empirix. "The process is especially difficult when testers and developers are distributed around the building, around the country or even around the globe. The biggest challenge is finding enough time to get through multiple iterations while actively engaging the database, application, system and network experts required to maximize performance. e-TEST suite 8.0 addresses this challenge head on by making load testing and performance tuning a collaborative process that is significantly more efficient and effective than existing approaches. This product release represents a huge step forward for automated testing solutions, and sets a new standard for our industry."

e-TEST suite 8.0 provides complete set of functional testing, load testing and test process management capabilities

In addition to the new collaborative load test capabilities of e-TEST suite 8.0, this new release includes:
- New diagnostics capabilities that allow users to create server profiles to monitor application performance under load and to identify bottlenecks more effectively;
- Enhancements to e-Manager Enterprise(TM), Empirix`s collaborative test process management solution, which allows users to document and share test plans, test cases, requirements and defects in an integrated Web-based repository to make both manual and automated testing more efficient and effective;
- Improved scripting capabilities for testing .NET and J2EE applications and SOAP-based Web Services - extending e-TEST suite`s built-in domain expertise for testing the most complex Web technologies with ease; and
- A new Java-based load agent that delivers greater throughput and scalability while also enabling users to test applications earlier in the lifecycle and to extend load scripts using any Java IDE.

Scripts from previous versions of e-TEST suite are fully compatible with version 8.0, and as always all e-TEST suite scripts are fully compatible with Empirix`s application performance management solution, OneSight® - so that organizations can ensure quality across the application lifecycle, from pre-deployment through production.
