Web-based sales at Sharper Image Corp. increased 40% in February over February 2001 to $5 million, the company reports. Companywide sales grew 34% over February last year to $36 million. Internet sales accounted for 13.9% of sales in February vs. 13.4% a year ago.
Sharper Image is one of the few retailers growing consistently across channels. Store sales increased 40% to $20.5 million while comparable store sales increased 24%. Catalog sales increased 21% to $10.5 million from last February.
At J. Crew Group Inc., companywide sales in February were down 14.6% while Internet sales were flat. J. Crew reported total revenue of $45.6 million compared to $53.4 million for February a year ago. Comparable store sales decreased 25.7%.
Internet sales totaled $13 million in February virtually unchanged from $13.1 million a year ago. The Internet accounted for 28.5% of J. Crew’s revenue in the month vs. 24.5% a year ago. Catalog revenue slipped 27% to $7.8 million from $10.7 million.
"Disappointing sales results reflect a significant decline in store traffic and lower quantities of clearance merchandise,” said CFO Scott Rosen. “Additionally, customer response to our new spring assortments was mixed, marking a tough start to the season."
February sales at Bluefly Inc., online retailer of designer brands at
discount prices, increased by more than 13% to $2.7 million from $2.4 million for
February 2002, the company reports.
