Napster expands its college access programs
Online music downloading service Napster, a division of entertainment company Roxio Inc., has reached agreements with six colleges and universities to offer legitimate music downloading for students. It is part of Napster’s strategy of offering multi-channel ways for customers to access online music, including selling pre-paid Napster cards in retail stores.
Naspter says Cornell University, George Washington University, Middlebury College, University of Miami, The University of Southern California and Wright State University of Ohio will work with Napster to create campus-specific programs to provide students access to Napster`s subscription service and 800,000-digital song catalog. Napster says the goals of the agreements are to combat peer-to-peer music piracy, conserve university bandwidth costs and protect intellectual property. Penn State University and University of Rochester joined Napster`s university program last winter. Penn State is expanding the offering this fall to students at all 23 campuses.
The roll out this fall across the new schools and the Penn State expansion will provide access to Napster for over 150,000 undergrad and graduate students. Napster says several schools plan to offer a separate Napster program to alumni, parents, faculty and staff.
