Gross merchandise volume at eBay Inc. reached $8 billion in the second quarter, up 42% over the $5.6 billion in last year’s second quarter, the company reported this week. Fixed price trading, represented by the “Buy It Now” feature at eBay, reached $2.2 billion.
New listings of merchandise reached 332.3 million, up 48% from 225 million a year earlier. In a measure of eBay’s developing power as an e-shopping mall for retail goods, new listings included 16.4 million items in eBay stores, up nearly quintuple the 3.4 million a year earlier. EBay hosted 181,000 stores, up from 121,000 a year ago.
Registered users at eBay.com rose 51% to 114 million from 75.3 million a year earlier. Active users, those who bid, bought or listed merchandise in the previous 12 months, rose 41% to 48 million from 34.1 million a year earlier.
Meanwhile, eBay is benefiting from all this activity. Net income increased 107% in Q2 from a year earlier, reaching $190.4 million. Net revenue in the quarter reached $773.4 million, up 52% from $509.3 million a year ago.
