Internet sales at J.C. Penney Co. Inc. rose 40% for the first 26 weeks ended July 31 and 30% in July over the comparable periods last year, while comp store sales declined about 8% for the both the first half and July, Penney said today.
Penney, No. 13 in Internet Retailer'sTop 300 Guide to online retailers, said combined catalog/Internet sales rose 8.3% for the half, to $1.18 billion from $1.15 billion a year ago, but declined year-to-year 1% in July, to $175 million from $177 million. Penney didn’t break out the dollar volumes of catalog and web sales.
Total store sales rose 8.1% for the half, to $6.7 billion from $6.2 billion, while comp stores sales rose 8.3%. July total store sales rose 8.3% to $1 billion from $928 million, while comp store sales rose 8.1%.
