Online sales in the second quarter reached $15.7 billion, up 23.1% from the second quarter a year ago, the Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce announced today.
The bureau also reported that total retail sales were up 7.8% in the quarter to $919 billion.
E-commerce sales were up 0.9% over the first quarter sales while total retail sales were up 10.1% over Q1.
The Commerce Department reports that Internet sales accounted for 1.7% of all retail sales, down from 1.9% in Q1. In calculating that number, the Commerce Department includes sales that are likely never to go online, such as fuel and restaurant food and drink, and so the proportion of retail sales that the Internet represents is higher than what the Commerce Department reports.
