Bulbs.com turns on Narragansett Electric Co. customers

Worcester, MA-based Bulbs.com, an online retailer that sells lightbulbs, and the Rhode Island-based Narragansett Electric Co. have sold more than 14,000 Phillips Energy Star lightbulbs to residential customers since July. The electric company teamed with Bulbs.com to offer the utility’s residential customers in 38 Rhode Island communities six bulbs for only $14.95 delivered. Narragansett’s parent company, National Grid, is offering $30 towards the cost of the sixpack of bulbs. The deal is limited to one six pack of bulbs per household. The two companies engaged in a similar promotion last summer. Using the 20-watt, 4-year Energy Star bulbs can save $300 in electricity in four years, according to Narragansett Electric.

The alliance allows Narragansett customers to participate in a rebate program using the convenience of the Internet, Narragansett officials say. The company included a coupon touting the Bulbs.com offer in customers’ monthly electric bills during July. To get the rebate, customers must visit the Bulbs.com web page and type in their ZIP code. The $30 rebate offer is valid through October 2001 and is open to customers served by Narragansett’s parent company, National Grid. Distribution companies include Massachusetts Electric, Narragansett Electric and Nantucket Electric.
