eBay drop-off stores continue to expand

The eBay drop-off store market continues to grow, and in different ways. While QuickDrop International plans to open 16 stores in the Los Angeles area this year, bringing its total to 34, PostNet International recently opened 20, for a total of 31, plus a web site, PostNetTrading.com. NuMarkets, meanwhile, has launched a training facility for new franchisees and employees.

PostNet plans to have 100 stores by year-end, and QuickDrop says it has franchise contracts to open 500 stores in the U.S. and another 100 abroad.

"Los Angeles is an important market for us that is virtually untapped," says Murray Mead, president of QuikDrop. "Presence in L.A. County will reinforce the store locations we already have in Ventura County, Orange County, Riverside County and San Diego County."

Brian Spindle, executive vice president of PostNet, says he expects the Trading Post eBay drop-off service to grow into an important third leg of his PostNet stores, which also offer shipping services through UPS and FedEx.

EBay drop-off stores, which operate independently of eBay Inc., allow consumers to drop off items to be auctioned on eBay.com. The stores handle all processing and maintenance of eBay listings and handle settlements with buyers. The stores charge a fee based on the final selling price. More than 25 eBay drop-off store companies have launched in the past year.
